Types of Rarities

See also: Make-Your-Own Slots (Mothcats)

Common

Also known as Classic traits, the standard Mothcat appearance is based off of a combination of real-life cats and moths. Traits will generally get rarer as the they stray further away from the original concept of moth-cat hybrids.

Certain traits, like leafy antennae and wings, are so widespread that they are considered common traits despite not being a natural trait seen in regular cats and moths.

Rare

Traits based off of other real-life animals or considered "unique/luxury" traits in real cats often fall under the rare trait category. Mothcats exist all around the world of Falena and evolved to adapt to their environments. In some cases, these traits were applied to them by fairies or witches seeking to create a new look for their companions.

Ultra Rare

Traits that are elemental or considered high luxury fall under the ultra rare category. In general, elemental traits are very unstable and most Mothcats who are born with them do not survive past kittenhood. Mothcats with elemental traits are very rarely seen and over time have come to exist only in legends.

Exclusive

Exclusive is a blanket term for traits unavailable to MYO slots. Also called Legendary or Illegal traits, these traits are extremely unique and often times one of a kind. They are also used to describe the distinctive traits of other Mothcat breeds. Traits belonging to certain Mothcat breeds cannot be made with normal MYO's.

Applied

See also: Applied Traits (Mothcats)

Applied traits refer to traits that need to be "applied" via the Mothcats ARPG. Such traits include accessories, clothing, and special color effects.

While there are no color restrictions for Mothcat coats, traits that give "special effects" to a Mothcat's coat are limited. Certain visual effects, such as glittering and glowing, are considered applied traits and can only be added to Mothcats with special ARPG items or purchasable vouchers. In the past, such visual effects were considered rare traits, but due to various reasons, they are now application-only traits.

Antennae

Mothcats sport antennae similar to moths and other insects. These antennae are fully functional and act alongside Mothcat whiskers to help them detect changes in their surroundings. Mothcats with standard antennae are highly sensitive to their environment, while more luxurious antennae serve other functions... or may simply be there for decoration.

▶ TRAIT CHART
Trait Name Origin ("Type") Description
Common Traits

Original Classic Mothcat antennae are thin, feather-like protrusions. For simplicity, they are drawn as solid, elongated "footballs"; however, more realistic styles may draw them with the proper moth antenna texture as desired.

Generic simple leaf shapes are allowed for the common rarity leafy antennae. Please see this link for more details on leafy traits.

Q-Tip antennae only have tear-shaped ends. Please see this link for more details on q-tip antennae.

Common tier swirly antennae are relatively short. Please refer to this link for an explanation of antennae length rarities.

Thin-bodied antennae which resemble tree twigs, but thankfully, are not as brittle! Stick antennae should be distinct from antlers, following these guidelines.

Rare Traits

Unlike classic antennae, these antennae heavily resemble the appearance of a bird feather. While they do not offer as much sensitivity as standard antennae, they are very attractive and popular among the wealthy. Different styles are available for feather traits which may affect rarity. Please see this link for more details.

The basic "flower-end q-tip" shape is the most common form of floral antennae. Different styles are available for floral traits, which may affect rarity. Please see this link for more details.

Any shape at the end of q-tip antennae which are not tear-drop shaped are considered rare, including but not limited to pom-pom shapes, round balls, stars, etc. Please see this link for more details on q-tip antennae.

A Mothcat whose stick antennae have grown leaves! Unlike real leaves, they remain fresh all year 'round. Please see this link for more details on leafy traits.

Ultra Traits

Any type of "hard" horn is considered an ultra rare or higher. Horns are not natural among Mothcats and are often associated with "tough" elements, like rock. Their horns are magically enhanced so that they do not weigh down on their heads. Mothcats with horns are able to use them for fighting. They are also commonly found among Cursed Mothcats as witches prefer this more intimidating look for their companions. Horns after a certain length and of a certain shape are considered illegal. Please see this page for more details.

Similar to the horn trait, antlers are considered ultra rare or higher. Antlers are softer than horns and are often velvety to touch. They are also magically enhanced to be lightweight and can be used for sparring.

Leaves and fruit may grow on tree branch antlers. Depending on the Mothcat (or Mothlion), the leaves and fruit may change with the seasons. Tree branch antlers are magically enhanced to be weightless. They are not meant for fighting.

Any set of antennae can be doubled for this trait, but the rarity will depend on both traits. (So having multiple sets is one trait, and the type of antennae will be another trait.)

Any type of stone or crystal falls under the crystal antennae category. Crystals can be any shape or color (including multicolored crystals), but they need to be the same type of crystal for both antennae. The antennae may be asymmetrical.

Distinct from crystal antennae, the elemental ice antennae are cool to the touch, and sometimes found on Mothcats from the Northern regions, where they are believed to be important for temperature regulation.

Two motes of magical water sit on the mothcat's head in place of antennae, able to stay in place in spite of their fluid nature. Apparently, they taste like wet fur.

Two flames burn eternal on the forehead of a mothcat, generally warm to the touch unless they're especially hot-headed (punintended).

Sometimes, Mothcats are born without antennae. It happens very rarely, though.

Exclusive Traits

Unicorn horns came from a fairy's love for the magical unicorn. Unicorns are constantly growing and need to be worn down to maintain their shape. They can be carved or decorated, as desired by the Mothcat or its owner. Unicorns can be used to stab the enemies of the owner.

Any other trait is exclusive and cannot be made unless with permission from floramisa. If you have any suggestions or questions, please contact her on dA or Discord.

Ears

While most Mothcats have common, triangle ears, it is said in ancient times that fairies experimented mixing other animal traits into Mothcats. Such experimentation led to Mothcats born with the ears of other animals. These traits are hard to find among bred Mothcats, as even in the wild, they are rare. Mothcats with other animal-like ears tend to be shunned by other wild Mothcats, thus they prefer to live alone.

▶ TRAIT CHART
Trait Name Origin ("Type") Description
Common Traits

Original Most Mothcats have ears that are small and triangle-shaped.

Original While most modern Mothcats are kept as household pets, feral Mothcats still exist in the wild. They are most easily identified by their tipped (tufted) ears. Not all tuft-eared Mothcats are feral, however. Mothcat breeders have successfully bred the gene into some of their luxury Mothcat lines to make them look more "wild" and "exotic."

Rare Traits

Mothcats with bat ears have ultra sensitive hearing and can identify even the slightest movements around them. They are not very fluffy, unfortunately.

These big ears are very soft and fluffy, much like their fennec fox inspirations. Tufted fennec ears of the same rarity are seen on occasion.

These ears are long and thin. Mothcats with rabbit ears are often mistaken for rabbits, themselves.

Unlike folded ears, these ears naturally curl backwards.

My, what big ears you have! Well, I mean, they're not Fennec-big. But hey, they're still taller, pointier, and fluffier than your classic mothcat ears.

Ultra Traits

These ears don't come to a point, they are perfectly round like a teddy bear's.

These rabbit ears flop down, unable to be held upright.

One ear flops downwards while the other stands upright. There is no preference between which ear lops.

These ears are folded forward by fairy magic for an endearing docile look. Humans haven't been able to replicate this effect without causing serious health problems, so only the magically-folded ears can be found.

Due to the dilution of magical bloodlines, sometimes only one of a Mothcat's ears will fold forward.

Humans bred for fluffy ears that vaguely resemble butterfly wings.

It took the fairies a few tries to figure out how to give Mothcats the gift of flight; these feathered wing ears are a remnant of some of the earlier attempts.

After creation of the woolly mane, the faeries worked for weeks to magically shape Mothcats' ears to match. These fairly short ears are notable for sticking out sideways from a Mothcat's head.

Exclusive Traits

For when papillon ears aren't fluffy enough.

Any other trait is exclusive and cannot be made unless with permission from floramisa. If you have any suggestions or questions, please contact her on dA or Discord.

Manes

Manes are one of the prominent features which differentiate a Mothcat from a common housecat, and the full, fluffy mane fur increases their popularity as pets. The mane of a Mothcat is imbued with magic, often making it a host for elemental traits, such as the rare cloudy mane. The magic of a Mothcat’s mane makes them crucial for the survival of the species; Mothcat parents use their mane fur to wrap a newborn Mothkitten’s cocoon, and is required for their development. Cocoons wrapped successfully from elemental manes are a rare and wondrous sight!

▶ TRAIT CHART
Trait Name Origin ("Type") Description
Common Traits

Original Classic mothcat manes are full and smooth, creating a fluffy ring around their neck that extends down their chest to their stomach.

Original The scruff mane still forms a thick ring of fur around a mothcat's neck, but unlike classic, it doesn't reach all the way down the chest to the stomach.

A mane made entirely of leaves. Some can produce small flowers.

Rare Traits

A surprisingly stable elemental mane, made of a puffy cloud.

Some mothkittens lose less fur than others when they grow up, resulting in a miniature lion appearance.

Humans have bred manes to resemble show horses. Those left untrimmed tend to become loose and flowing.

Instead of thick fur, this mane is comprised of feathers. Sometimes it also includes a tall crest similar to a cockatiel.

Unlike the leafy mane, this mane is made entirely out of flower petals.

This fashionable mane had its origins in Mothcat shows, where owners would shave and style their Mothcats' manes to give them a more distinctive look. Boa manes in particular were so popular that breeders found a way to replicate it, and Mothcats with "natural" Boa manes are all the rage in urban areas.

Ultra Traits

Occasionally a Mothkitten keeps so much of its fluff that it develops a lion mane extending down its belly.

Like a sheep, a mothcat with a wooly mane has its entire torso covered in thick wool.

According to legend, some Mothcats develop a mane that extends in a line down their back, similar to that of a dragon.

The flame is warm to the touch if the Mothcat trusts you, making them great for hugging. They are highly sought after as therapy animals.

A mane made of magical water. Don't drink it.

Crystal manes may be made of a crystal cluster, or appear as one solid crystal. Crystals can be any shape or color, but they need to be the same type of crystal. Crystals may be more than one color.

Distinct from crystal manes, elemental ice manes are cool to the touch. More eclectic legends pin the origins of this trait to a Northern Mothcat so chilly that their mane froze permanently, but there probably isn't any truth to them.

Exclusive Traits

An exceptionally rare condition, most common in hairless mothcats, where a mothkitten's fluff continuously falls off until there is nothing left. Without a mane to create a cocoon, these mothcats cannot breed.

Any other trait is exclusive and cannot be made unless with permission from floramisa. If you have any suggestions or questions, please contact her on dA or Discord.

Wings

According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a Mothcat should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The Mothcat, of course, flies anyway because Mothats don't care what humans think is impossible. Plus, y'know, magic.

▶ TRAIT CHART
Trait Name Origin ("Type") Description
Common Traits

Original Classic moth wings tend to be drawn as elongated "football" shapes.

Original Round moth wings do not come to a point and are generally more broad than classic wings.

Simple leaf shapes are allowed for the common rarity leafy wings. Please see this link for more details on leafy traits.

Rare Traits

Butterfly wings are generally larger and more decorative than classic wings. They are highly sought after by humans for Mothcat shows.

Click to enlarge. Extended Butterfly (Short)

A variety of butterfly wings with a small extension on the bottom.

These butterfly wings have transparent sections within them.

Two pairs of long, thin, transparent wings.

Beetle wings consist of one pair of transparent wings, similar to dragonfly wings, and a pair of hard forewings. These forewings act as a protective shell when not in flight.

A single pair of feathered bird wings, yet another remnant of the fairies' experimentation with birds.

Boney wings with stretchy membranes, similar to those of a bat.

Ultra Traits
Click to enlarge. Extended Butterfly (Long)

Butterfly wings with an exceptionally long extension on the bottom.

These flame wings only burn as hot as the mothcat wills them to.

These magical water wings will never evaporate, no matter how close to the sun you fly. Warning: do not try to fly into the sun.

Wings made of a surprisingly lightweight, living crystal. Crystals can be any shape or color, but they need to be the same type of crystal for both wings. Crystals may be more than one color.

In especially rare cases, Mothcats may be born with multiple sets of wings. Cherub wings are two pairs of feathered wings, and are often considered angelic and holy.

Exclusive Traits

Even rarer than cherub are seraph wings, three pairs of feathered wings. Though such Mothcats are often worshiped, they are also hunted for their rarity.

Any other trait is exclusive and cannot be made unless with permission from floramisa. If you have any suggestions or questions, please contact her on dA or Discord.

Tails

Most tail types found on your common housecat are common to Mothcats as well. That said, experimentation by both humans and fairies often results in Mothcats will tails usually found on entirely different animals! Rarest of all are unstable elemental tails, as well as mysterious and often unlucky tail duplication.

▶ TRAIT CHART
Trait Name Origin ("Type") Description
Common Traits

Original A long, flexible tail like you would find on most short-hair cats.

Original A long, fluffy cat tail.

Original The fur comes to a distinct point at the end of this medium-length tail.

Original A short, stumpy tail.

Rare Traits

A short, cottony tail like a bunny might have.

The fur of this long and slender tail is short except for the tip, which has a puff of longer fur.

Feathers protrude from the rear-end of the Mothcat, creating a bird-like tail. Different styles are available for feather traits which may affect rarity. Please see this link for more details.

A thick, fluffy tail with an imitation "fin" on the end.

Similar to a famous "doge" that dramatically increased the popularity of this trait, this fluffy tail curls over the back of the mothcat.

Long and flowing hair covers this tail, similar to a horse tail.

All of the fur has fallen off this tail, giving it a rat-like appearance.

The ultimate look for Mothcats who wish to camouflage among the forest undergrowth... as long as it's summer, that is. Please see this link for more details on leafy traits.

Thanks to eccentric human breeders, some Mothcats exist with no visible tail.

Ultra Traits

Mothcats born with two tails are considered bad omens in Eastern legends. Any set of tails can be multiplied for this trait, but the rarity will depend on both traits. (So having multiple sets is one trait, and the type of tail will be another trait.)

Recently there have been sightings of mothcats with strange draconic tails, often in areas with potent magical energies. These tails are said to be thick and scaly, lined with spines, and always seem to end in a spade tip. How edgy.

This tail is made of a fluffy cloud, less stable than its mane equivalent.

A magical flame. It will only burn someone the mothcat doesn't trust.

A long, flowing tail made of magical water.

Magical crystals grow in place of a tail. Crystal tails can be any shape or color, but they need to be the same type of crystal. Crystals may be more than one color.

Distinct from crystal tails, elemental ice tails are cool to the touch. You'll poke your eye out, kid!

A more showy variant of the leafy tail, this Mothcat's tail is instead one giant flower! Do not get this trait unless you're okay with your Mothcat attracting giant bees.

Exclusive Traits

This tail is divided at the end, creating two distinct tips.

Any other trait is exclusive and cannot be made unless with permission from floramisa. If you have any suggestions or questions, please contact her on dA or Discord.

Miscellaneous

Miscellaneous traits are optional add-ons to the standard Mothcat build. They are often popular among show breeders seeking to add some extra pizzazz to their charges, such as with silky long paw tufts or stylish heads of hair. That said, certain miscellaneous traits hearken back to Mothcats’ wild heritage and the legends built around them, with rarities such as wing tufts or soul tufts considered omens of good or evil.

▶ TRAIT CHART
Trait Name Origin ("Type") Description
Common Traits

Extra clumps of fluff at the elbow and ankle joints.

Extra clumps of fluff behind the paws.

Rare Traits
Click to enlarge. Long Paw Tufts

A bit of longer fur behind the paws of the mothcat, giving it a flowing quality.

Long fur growing above the paws, around the wrists.

Has your Mothcat been romping around in a fall leaf pile, or are those supposed to be there? Please see this link for more details on leafy traits.

Because paw wings are so unstable, it is very rare that they develop fully, leading to small tufts of feathers at the base of a Mothcat's paw instead.

Humans have bred Mothcats with cottony puffs around their wrists, not unlike a Poodle. They are a popular choice in Mothcat shows.

Pointy teeth just long enough to stick out when the Mothcat's mouth is closed, unlike the regular sharp front teeth that most Mothcats posses.

Turn those fangs upside down; an underbite gives a Mothcat two pointy teeth sticking up from their bottom lip even when their mouth is closed.

While most Mothcats have sharp, retractable claws, talons have grown so large that they are unable to be retracted. Rumors have it that this trait has unsavory origins in illegal Mothcat fighting, but regardless, owners of Mothcats with the talon trait better have some hardcore scratching posts at the ready.

Click to enlarge. Long Cheek Fluff

The fur on the mothcat's cheeks is extra long and fluffy.

Click to enlarge. Short Head Hair

Long hair on a mothcat's head that is not connected to the mane. It can be styled, but the length can't go past the Mothcat's cheekbones.

A failed faerie attempt at long fur that ended up so endearing, it became a trait all its own. Many Mothcats have short facial "scruff," which is not a trait - it is only when the facial hair is long and distinct that it becomes rare+.

Ultra Traits

These paws are trailed by small spirits, or will-o-the-wisps. They are considered a bad omen.

Magical flames on a Mothcat's heels. Considered a bad omen, most people avoid such Mothcats if sighted.

Tiny wings attached behind the paws. In addition to being adorable, many consider Mothcats with winged tufts to be holy.

Shining crystals attached behind the paws. Crystals can be any shape or color, but they need to be the same type of crystal for each "tuft." Crystals may be more than one color.

Whether they're naturally or artificially attached, we'll never know! Crystals can be any shape or color, but each cluster needs to be the same type of crystal. Crystals may be more than one color.

This dainty and cute look for Mothcats is popular with children, provided they don't have a pollen allergy. Flowers can be any shape or color, but each tuft must be the same type of flower.

Finally, you can live your aesthetic to the fullest. Flowers can be any shape or color, but each must be the same type of flower.

These fangs are extra EXTRA, and extend far beyond the Mothcat's chin.

Click to enlarge. Long Head Hair

Hair on a Mothcat's head that is long enough to reach past their cheekbones. Not a part of the mane.

Eyes

Like typical cats, Mothcats are able to see fairly well in the dark. Similarly, Mothcat pupils change shape, becoming slits in bright light and round in low light, but are typically listed as sharp or round according to their owner’s aesthetic preference. Other traits standard to Mothcat eyes are white sclera, irises of the same color, and dark/black pupils. Deviations from these standards increase the rarity of the eyes, the most striking being pupils of odd shapes or glow with dim color.

▶ TRAIT CHART
Trait Name Origin ("Type") Description
Common Traits

Original The eyes have no special colors or effects; the sclera are white, and both irises are the same solid color.

Original Large, round pupils like a house cat.

Original Narrow, slit pupils.

Rare Traits

Two-colored eyes. Most commonly this means one eye is a different color than the other, but it can also present as two colors within the same eye.

The so-called "whites" of the eyes are no longer white.

Ultra Traits

Pupils that are any shape other than Sharp or Round.

These eyes emit their own dim light.

Unstable magic has manifested in eyes which appear to emit colored whisps of smoke, in a very rare, but striking look.

Exclusive Traits

Any other trait is exclusive and cannot be made unless with permission from floramisa. If you have any suggestions or questions, please contact her on dA or Discord.

Coat Lengths

Though the standard Mothcat coat is short, breeders have found ways to grow fine, plush coats. Sometimes, a Mothkitten’s fur will be shed completely as they age, resulting in a hairless (and hypoallergenic?) Mothcat! Recently, Mothcats with curly fur have been sighted in the vicinity of Aldora… maybe it’s just the humidity.

▶ TRAIT CHART
Trait Name Origin ("Type") Description
Common Traits

Mothcats with short fur are the most common, and always in style!

Rare Traits

A Mothcat with a long, plush coat that requires constant attention to avoid burrs and tangles in the Aldoran wilds. More commonly seen in house pets.

A variation of long hair with softly curled ends.

Ultra Traits

Some Mothcats lose their fur entirely as they grow from a kitten to a young adult. This is a very bittersweet occurrence; while some value these unique cats for their striking appearance and rarity, the loss of mane fur to wrap a cocoon often makes these cats unable to have kittens without intervention from Falena.

Different Breeds / Variations

See also: Mothcat Breeds

The land of Falena is vast, each climate imposing unique challenges on its inhabitants. Because of this and the influence of the demigod-like Mothlions, Mothcats can be found in a variety of different breeds. Each variant is said to descend from a different Mothlion, and the unique traits they possess as a result are celebrated or jealously guarded throughout generations. Mothcats of the same breed have often formed their own societies and traditions, such as Desert and Northern Mothcats, while some, such as Aquatic Mothcats, are more widespread, with only loose fealty to their rulers. All variants have one thing in common, however – they are incredibly rare, and a human who befriends one is lucky indeed!
