Mothcats is a closed species owned by floramisa on deviantART.com, meaning they cannot be created and used freely within the group. Make-Your-Own Slots are available for purchase and as participation prizes for various group events. Slot owners are able to make one (1) Mothcat based on the rarity of the slot they own.

Designs made without the use of an MYO slot are not officially recognized by the group and cannot be used to participate in events or the ARPG.

Slot Types

There are several types of MYO slots available in for Mothcat creations, based on the Mothcats Trait Information page. All prices are in USD and remain consistent between sales (the prices never change).

Ways to Obtain MYO Slots

There are various ways to obtain MYO slots. The most common way is through the general MYO slot sales that occur about once every other month.

In addition, MYO slots can be obtained by:

  • Earning them as prizes in Mothcats events and/or ARPG
  • Winning them in group contests and raffles
  • Winning them from member raffles

Slot Ownership Rules

In general:

  • MYO slots are one-time use only (individual slots can only be redeemed once)
  • There is no limit to how many MYO slots a single user can own
  • Slots may be resold, traded, or gifted per the status listed on their entry in the MYO slot masterlist
  • Designs may not be blatantly referenced from copyrighted/licensed characters
  • Designs may not be blatantly copied from existing designs (Mothcat or non-Mothcat)
  • Only the traits available on the trait sheet can be used for MYO designs
  • Slot owners may commission other artists to design their Mothcats for them

Official Artist Design Service

Mothcats offers a special design service run by a set of group-sponsored guest artists, otherwise known as Mothcats Official Artists. It is possible to commission or even request an MYO designed for free by one of the Official Artists.

More information about the Mothcats MYO design service can be found at this link.

MYO Approval & Registration Process

** All MYO-related questions should be posted to the #ask-admins channel in our discord server or noted to the Mothcats group. **

You Will Need:

  1. Art of the finished design you want to submit
  2. (For Mothcats) A filled in Mothchive base -OR- art from commissioning an OA for design help
    • These bases can be found here!
    • Remember when filling out the base not to edit the lineart (except in the case of disabilities) or add eyeshine.
    • (If attaching accessories) Note that while approval images and art commissioned from OAs can show attached accessories, the Mothchive base cannot.

To Submit:

  • Navigate to the entry of the MYO Slot you wish to use on the Mothcats.com site.
    • You can view your owned slots here!
  • Click "Submit MYO Design" in the sidebar.
  • Click the "Create Request" button.

You will now have a draft of your MYO submission! You can spend as much time working on this draft as you like before submitting it.

The Comments tab

If you would like to obtain a portrait salon before your character is added to the masterlist, specifically note that you are submitting your design as pre-approval for a portrait. Otherwise, you do not need to add anything here.

Click "Save".

The Images Tab

For Mothcats, upload the filled in Mothchive base unless you have masterlist-suitable art from an OA, such as a portrait salon or commissioned design help. If you would like to obtain a portrait salon first, upload your approval image here instead, with a note in the comments as mentioned above.

If you have separate approval art-- finished art of the design, which you would previously have submitted to the deviantArt gallery for approval-- provide a link to it in the Approval Image Link field. Note that this image may depict accessories-- however, note that these will not be official until you have attached them to the character after approval.

For subspecies, upload the finished art of the design here. This should be the art that you would previously have submitted to the deviantArt gallery for approval.

Enter in the Mothcats site username of the designer(s) of the character, as well as the artist(s) who either drew the image or filled in the Mothchive base. You can add additional usernames by clicking the plus sign to the right of each row. If a designer or artist does not have a Mothcats site username, enter in a URL in the second box in the row. Only enter information into one field or the other, not both. You do not need to provide credit to the artists of the Mothchive base itself.

Click "Save".

The Add-Ons Tab

If you intend to apply any items to your MYO-- for instance, Trait Changes or essences-- select them here.

Do not select accessories to apply at this time unless they are being permanently attached as part of commissioned OA MYO assistance, a portrait, or similar, in which case you must do so. You will be able to add other items to the character's inventory immediately upon approval.

Click "Save".

The Traits Tab

Click the "Traits" tab.

  • For Mothcats, first select the character's subtype. For instance (and most commonly,) this will be "Standard".
    • Then, click "Add Trait" and select one of the character's traits.
    • Repeat this until all of the character's traits are listed.
    • For eyes, remember to list both the appropriate traits for the eye type and pupil type!
    • (NEW) Coat type does need to be listed!
    • When entering in applied traits, state in the "extra info" box where they occur, in broad terms (for instance, "Mane", "Antennae", "Markings")
  • For subspecies, the species and subtype will already be set. Select the rarity "subspecies".
    • For Flowerbuns:
      • Click "Add Trait" and select the "Flower Type" trait.
      • In the "Extra Info" field, type in the name of the flower, plant, or fungus the Flowerbun is based upon.
        • If appropriate, you may provide the scientific name in italic (<i> </i>) tags.
          • Note that this does not impact the text within the form field, and will only display properly on the Flowerbun's masterlist entry once approved.
        • If you have used a fictional flower, plant, or fungus, simply enter Fictional Flower/Fungus/Plant as appropriate.
  • Click "Save".

Submitting

Check the information you've entered on each tab.

When you're ready to submit, click the "Status" tab...

...And click "Submit Request"!

Approval

Once you've confirmed your submission, it will be added to the MYO submission queue. It will then be reviewed by the Mothcats admins.

If there are issues with your submission, it will be returned to draft form with admin comments-- at which point you can make any necessary changes. Again, you can take as much time as you need when working on drafts.

Similarly, if you requested pre-approval for a portrait salon, upon approval your submission will be returned to draft form with an admin comment indicating it is pre-approved. Note that though the design is pre-approved, the character is not official at this point, and will need to be submitted again once you have obtained a portrait commissioned from an OA.

Upon being accepted, your submitted MYO will be incorporated directly into the masterlist! You can now use your new character within the group!

Additionally, we strongly recommend submitting approved designs to the Approved MYO Designs gallery in the group!

Accepted but Unregistered Characters

Prior to the implementation of the above system, characters made with MYO slots were first approved as one step and then added to the masterlist as another step.

For characters who were approved through this process but not added to the masterlist, follow this procedure to register them.

You will need:

  1. Your approved MYO submission in the Approved MYO Designs gallery
  2. (For Mothcats) A filled in Mothchive base -OR- art from commissioning an OA for design help -OR- art commissioned from an OA as part of a portrait salon
    • These bases can be found here!
    • Remember when filling out the base not to edit the lineart (except in the case of disabilities) or add eyeshine.
    • (If attaching accessories) Note that while approval images and art commissioned from OAs can show attached accessories, the Mothchive base cannot.

Obtain a Dedicated MYO Slot

At the MYO Kiosk, submit a request.

In the URL field, enter the link to your approved, but unregistered, MYO.

In the comment box, state that you would like to register the MYO.

Once this request is reviewed, an admin will create a special MYO slot on the site that can only be used to register the approved design.

Register the Design

From this point, follow the guide to submitting a MYO above.

Additionally, on the "Comments" tab, provide a link to your approved MYO, and on the "Masterlist Image" tab, upload the filled in Mothchive base or, if applicable, art commissioned from an OA.

Disclaimer

Other artists and people who own moth-cat hybrid characters are welcome to create and own them as they please. We, at Mothcats, do not police or condone the harassment of moth-cat character owners.

The only thing we ask is that the owners of these characters do not claim that their design is part of the Mothcats closed species on deviantART.
